So, you are thinking of getting a new puppy or dog? Just because one particular breed looks good on a movie or a TV show, doesn't mean it is going to work in your family! Here are some characteristics to consider when thinking of bringing a new dog to the home:

Temperament- Pick a dog that resembles your traits. If you like to chill out on the sofa on nights & weekends, don't get a puppy or dog that is hyper- neither you or the new canine will be very happy!
Exercise- Be sure that you can devote exercise time to a dog that has a lot of energy. Some smaller dogs are happy running around a house or apartment, but some dogs require regular exercise. Your dog should compliment your commitment for exercise.
Big Dog/Little Dog- Here are some things to consider. Larger dogs ultimately cost more. Many treatments are based on their size or weight, thus resulting in higher vet bills. Larger dogs eat more than little ones, so dog food consumption is something you need to consider. When dogs eat, of course there will be waste. Smaller dogs yield smaller piles of you-know-what!
Allergies- When dead skin is shed from dogs, it is called dander. When it is shed & released into the air, some people have allergic reactions and may sneeze, have itchy watery eyes or experience wheezing. Some breeds shed less dander than others. If allergies may be a problem, consider dogs with low dander.
Grooming Maintenance- Toy breeds and dogs with longer hair require more brushing than those with medium to short hair. When required, brushing should be done on a daily basis. It is more difficult to find flees in dogs with longer coats of hair.
